What Is an AI Overview, and Why Is It Showing Up on Your Google Searches?

If you’ve searched Google recently and noticed a paragraph-style summary sitting above the usual list of blue links, often with a few small source links attached, that’s an AI Overview.

What it actually is

Google’s AI Overview reads across multiple web pages, synthesizes an answer, and presents it directly on the search results page before any traditional listing. For a growing share of informational searches, questions like “what’s the best time to visit Sri Lanka” or “how does GST work for small businesses,” this summary is the first thing a searcher sees, and many never scroll past it.

Why it matters for your business

If your website is one of the two or three sources Google’s AI cites, you get visibility even if you’re not the top traditional ranking. If you’re not cited, you’re invisible for that search, regardless of how well you’d normally rank. This is a structural shift in how visibility works, not just another ranking factor.

What increases your odds of being cited

  • Content that directly and clearly answers a specific question, near the top of the page.
  • Pages that are already well-established and trusted for that topic.
  • Clean, well-structured HTML with genuine headings, not just visual formatting.

You can’t directly control whether an AI Overview appears, or which sources it picks. What you can control is whether your content is structured well enough to be a strong candidate when it does. We cover how to do that in our GEO guide for Sri Lankan businesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Google AI Overview?

It's an AI-generated summary that Google shows above traditional search results for many informational queries, synthesizing an answer from multiple web sources with a small number of citations.

Can a business opt out of AI Overviews?

There's no dedicated opt-out for AI Overviews specifically. Blocking a page from being indexed by Google would remove it from Overviews too, but also from regular search results, which isn't a real trade-off for most businesses.

Do AI Overviews reduce traditional website traffic?

For some searches, yes, because users get an answer without clicking through. Being cited within the Overview itself is one way to still capture visibility and some traffic even when the summary answers the question directly.
