Most Sri Lankan business owners think of their Google Business Profile as a Maps listing. It’s become something more important than that: a verification signal AI systems use to confirm your business actually exists and operates where you say it does.
Why AI models care about this
AI systems are cautious about recommending a business they can’t verify. A complete, active, accurate Google Business Profile, with real photos, correct hours, a matching address, and genuine reviews, signals that a business is real and currently operating. An empty or outdated profile signals the opposite, even if your website itself is well-built.
What “complete” actually means
- Correct business name, exactly matching your website and other listings.
- Accurate category selection (don’t default to a generic category if a more specific one exists).
- Real photos of your premises, team, or work, not stock images.
- Current hours, updated for holidays and special closures.
- A complete “from the business” description that clearly explains what you do and who you serve.
- Ongoing reviews, ideally with owner responses.
The mistake we see most often
Businesses claim their profile once, fill in the basics, and never touch it again. An untouched profile from two years ago, with no recent reviews or updates, reads as a weaker trust signal than a profile that’s clearly maintained. Set a quarterly reminder to review and refresh yours.
This is one of the lowest-effort, highest-impact things a Sri Lankan business can do for both local SEO and GEO. It costs nothing and takes under an hour to fully complete.
